Black Mamo

Drepanis funerea Newton, A, 1894

Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Black Mamo, Drepanis funerea, was an extinct Hawaiian honeycreeper of Molokai in the Pacific Ocean, with subfossil evidence from Maui as well. It belonged to the Fringillidae and was first described by Newton in 1894. The bird was also called hoa, Molokai mamo, o'o nuku'umu and Perkins's mamo. It was an understory species, and its habitat was reduced by cattle and deer, while rats and mongooses took eggs and preyed on the bird itself. The last specimen was collected in 1907, and later searches failed to find any more.
