Black-naped Tern

Sterna sumatrana

The Black-naped Tern is a medium-sized seabird found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It has a distinctive black cap on the back of its head, which contrasts with its white plumage. This species is known for its graceful flight and agile diving abilities, which it uses to catch small fish and squid. Black-naped Terns are colonial breeders, nesting on sandy beaches and rocky islands. They are highly migratory, traveling long distances between their breeding and wintering grounds. Threats to this species include habitat destruction, disturbance at breeding sites, and pollution of coastal waters.
