Black Oystercatcher

Haematopus bachmani Audubon, 1838

Black Oystercatcher, Haematopus bachmani, breeds along the coastal north Pacific of North America and Middle America, from the western Aleutian Islands to west-central Baja California in north-west Mexico. It is a member of the oystercatcher family and, across most of its range, stands alone as the only one of its kind, with a small overlap with the American Oystercatcher on the Baja California coast. Audubon named it in 1838 after his friend John Bachman.
