Black Pitohui, Melanorectes nigrescens, is a bird of montane New Guinea in the family Pachycephalidae. It occurs across the highlands of New Guinea and breeds in Australasia. Its natural home is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest. The species was first described by Schlegel in 1871. It was once placed in Rectes, a name linked with Pitohui, before being moved to Melanorectes in 2013. It is also known as the black whistler and dusky pitohui. Six subspecies are recognised, with recorded populations in north-western, western, west-central, northern, east-central, north-eastern and south-eastern New Guinea.
