Black Rail

Laterallus jamaicensis

The Black Rail (Laterallus jamaicensis) is a small, secretive bird found in freshwater and saltwater marshes across the Americas. It is known for its elusive nature and is often heard more than seen due to its preference for dense vegetation. This species is primarily nocturnal and feeds on small invertebrates and seeds. The Black Rail's plumage is predominantly dark with subtle brown and gray tones, providing excellent camouflage in its marshland habitats. Due to habitat loss and degradation, the Black Rail faces conservation challenges, and its population status is of concern.
