Laterallus melanophaius
The Black Rail is a secretive and elusive bird species found in marshes and wetlands of the Americas. This small, chicken-sized bird has dark plumage with a short tail and a distinctive call that sounds like a ticking watch. It forages for insects, small crustaceans, and seeds in dense vegetation, using its long toes to walk on floating vegetation. Due to its secretive nature and preference for dense habitats, the Black Rail is seldom seen and is more often heard. Habitat loss and degradation threaten this species, and conservation efforts are focused on protecting and restoring its wetland habitats.
