Black Scoter

Melanitta americana

The Black Scoter is a medium-sized sea duck found in North America. Males have black plumage with a distinctive yellow knob at the base of the bill, while females are brown with pale cheeks. They are often seen diving for mollusks and crustaceans in coastal waters, and can be found in both saltwater and freshwater habitats during the breeding season. Black Scoters are known for their rapid wingbeats and distinctive calls. Although their population is currently stable, they face threats from habitat degradation and oil spills.
