Black Shama

Copsychus niger

The Black Shama, scientifically known as Copsychus niger, is a small passerine bird native to the Philippines. This bird is known for its melodious and complex song, often heard in the dense forests where it resides. The Black Shama has a glossy black plumage with a distinctive white rump, and its long tail enhances its graceful appearance. It forages for insects and small invertebrates on the forest floor, using its strong legs and bill to capture prey. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and trapping for the cage bird trade, the Black Shama faces conservation concerns and is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
