Himantopus novaezelandiae

The Black Stilt, scientifically known as Himantopus novaezelandiae, is a striking wading bird endemic to New Zealand. With its long, thin legs and distinctive black plumage, it is a remarkable sight in its natural habitat. These birds are typically found in braided riverbeds and shallow wetlands, where they forage for aquatic invertebrates and small fish. The Black Stilt is critically endangered, with a population of less than 100 individuals in the wild. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting their fragile habitat and managing threats such as predation and habitat loss.
