Black-vented Shearwater

Puffinus gavia

The Black-vented Shearwater (Puffinus gavia) is a medium-sized seabird found in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It has a dark brownish-black plumage with a distinctive white patch on the underwing. These birds are highly adapted for life at sea, with long, narrow wings and a streamlined body for efficient flight. They are skilled fliers and can cover long distances over the open ocean. Black-vented Shearwaters are colonial breeders, nesting in burrows on offshore islands. They feed on small fish and squid, often diving from the air to catch their prey. Although they are not currently considered globally threatened, they face threats from habitat degradation and accidental bycatch in fishing gear.
