Blackish Nightjar

Ptiloxena atroviolacea

The Blackish Nightjar (Ptiloxena atroviolacea) is a nocturnal bird found in Australia. It is a medium-sized nightjar with a cryptic plumage that provides excellent camouflage during the day. Its distinctive call, a repetitive 'chop chop chop' sound, is often heard at night in open woodlands and grasslands. The Blackish Nightjar is a ground-nesting bird, laying its eggs directly on the ground without a nest. It feeds on insects caught in flight using its wide gape and bristles around the mouth. This species is not currently considered to be globally threatened, and its population trend is thought to be stable.
