Blacksmith Lapwing
Vanellus armatus
The Blacksmith Lapwing, also known as the Blacksmith Plover, is a striking bird found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is named for its loud metallic 'tink, tink, tink' call, reminiscent of a blacksmith's hammer striking metal. This lapwing is characterized by its black crown, white face, and chestnut nape. Its underparts are white, and the wings and back are black with a greenish gloss. The Blacksmith Lapwing is often found in open grasslands, wetlands, and agricultural areas, where it forages for insects and small invertebrates. It is known for its distinctive aerial displays during the breeding season, where it performs acrobatic flights and vocalizations to attract a mate.
