Blue-backed Tanager

Cyanicterus cyanicterus (Vieillot, 1819)

Blue-backed Tanager, Cyanicterus cyanicterus, lives in northern South America, mainly in Amazonia and the Guianas, with records also from Venezuela and Brazil. It is the only member of its genus and was first described by Vieillot in 1819. The bird is tied to humid forest, forest edges and clearings with tall trees, and in Brazil it also occurs in savanna woodland. It stays high in the canopy and emergent treetops, where it is hard to see. Its range includes very small, separate populations in the Amazon Basin.
