Blue Bird-of-paradise

Paradisornis rudolphi Finsch & Meyer, AB, 1886

Blue Bird-of-paradise, Paradisornis rudolphi, breeds in central and south-eastern New Guinea in Australasia. It is a passerine in the birds-of-paradise family and was first described in 1886 by Finsch and Meyer. The species is the only member of Paradisornis and was once placed in Paradisaea. Males carry the showiest features, with the long tail wires and the ornate flank plumes found only in them. The bird is also noted for its elaborate courtship display, which is performed by the male alone while a female watches nearby.
