Blue-breasted Bee-eater, Merops variegatus, is a bird of central and eastern Africa, with breeding populations from south-eastern Nigeria to Angola and across eastern Africa. It belongs to the bee-eater family, Meropidae, in the order Coraciiformes. It is set apart by a blue line above the dark eye stripe, a white cheek, a yellow throat and a chest band made of deep purple-blue and chestnut. It was described by Vieillot in 1817. It is usually linked with open wet places, including reed-fringed shores, marshes, papyrus beds, grassy slopes and savanna edges.
