It is the southernmost member of its genus and is found on humid slopes with grass and thick shrubs, as well as along cloudforest edges. In Argentina it also uses drier country. Its range runs from La Paz and Cochabamba south to Salta and Tucumán, at 1,500 to 3,400 m, with most records between 2,000 and 2,500 m.
