Blue Swallow

Hirundo atrocaerulea

The Blue Swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) is a small passerine bird known for its stunning iridescent blue plumage. This species is endemic to southern Africa, where it is primarily found in open grasslands and savannas. Blue Swallows are aerial insectivores, often seen darting through the air in pursuit of their prey. They construct cup-shaped nests made of mud, which they attach to the walls of natural cavities or man-made structures. Unfortunately, the Blue Swallow is facing threats from habitat loss and degradation, as well as changes in land use practices. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore suitable habitats for this beautiful species.
