Blue-winged Pitta

Pitta megarhyncha

The Blue-winged Pitta is a strikingly colorful bird found in the forests and woodlands of Southeast Asia. It is known for its vibrant plumage, with a combination of blue, green, and black on its wings, a bright red belly, and a black head with a white stripe. These pittas are ground-dwelling and are often heard before they are seen, as they have a distinctive loud call. They forage for insects and small invertebrates in the leaf litter and are known for their secretive behavior. Breeding pairs perform elaborate courtship displays, and the female builds a domed nest on the ground. The Blue-winged Pitta is a migratory species, spending the breeding season in the northern parts of its range and migrating south for the winter.
