Bougainville Frogmouth

Aegotheles terborghi

The Bougainville Frogmouth (Aegotheles terborghi) is a small, nocturnal bird native to the forests of Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea. It is known for its distinctive frog-like call, which it uses to communicate with its mate and establish territory. This species has a mottled brown and grey plumage that provides excellent camouflage against the tree bark. Bougainville Frogmouths are insectivorous, feeding on a variety of insects and small invertebrates found in their forest habitat. They are well-adapted for a life of stealth and stillness, with a wide gape and bristles around the bill to aid in catching prey in the dark. Despite being relatively common within its restricted range, the Bougainville Frogmouth is vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation.
