Brazilian Merganser

Mergus octosetaceus

The Brazilian Merganser is a rare and critically endangered diving duck found in the rivers and streams of Brazil. With a slender body and a long, serrated bill, it is well-adapted for catching fish underwater. The male has a striking black and white plumage with a greenish sheen, while the female is more subdued with a brownish-gray coloration. These birds are highly elusive and prefer remote, undisturbed habitats with clear, fast-flowing water. Unfortunately, habitat destruction, pollution, and hunting have led to a drastic decline in their population, making them one of the rarest waterfowl species in the world.
