Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant, Ochthoeca fumicolor, is a passerine of the Tyrannidae family that breeds in western and north-eastern Colombia, north-western Venezuela and central Bolivia. It is a bird of montane country, using stunted forest near the treeline, Polylepis woodland, shrubby páramo and pastures with scrubby edges. Its range is split into separate parts across the Andes. The species is placed in the chat-tyrant group and was first described by Sclater in 1856. Four subspecies are recognised in the account followed here, with differences noted among them in the face, supercilium, wing bars and tail.
