Brown Teal

Anas chlorotis Gray, GR, 1845

Anatidae — Ducks, Geese, Swans

Brown Teal, Anas chlorotis, is a duck in the Anatidae family and the order Anseriformes. It breeds in Australasia on Great Barrier Island, off the north-east of North Island, and on other New Zealand satellites. The species is native to New Zealand. It was once treated as part of the same group as the flightless Auckland and Campbell teals, and the name Brown Teal was used for that broader group. It was heavily taken for food in the early colonial period, then became fully protected in 1921. Captive breeding and release into predator-managed areas later established local reintroduced populations after 2003.
