Buff-backed Heron

Ardeola idae

The Buff-backed Heron (Ardeola idae) is a small heron found in parts of Africa and southern Europe. It is characterized by its buff-colored back and wings, contrasting with its white underparts. During the breeding season, it develops long plumes on the back of its head and neck. This species is often found in wetland habitats such as marshes, swamps, and riverbanks, where it feeds on small fish, insects, and amphibians. The Buff-backed Heron is known for its graceful and agile hunting behavior, often standing still and patiently waiting for prey to come within striking distance. While not currently considered globally threatened, the population trend is decreasing due to habitat loss and degradation.
