Buff-bellied Mannikin, Lonchura melaena, is a passerine of the estrildid finch family found in Australasia, on New Britain, New Ireland and Buka Island. It was described by P. L. Sclater in 1880. Its breeding range covers New Britain and New Ireland in the eastern Bismarck Archipelago, together with Buka in the northern Solomon Islands. It occurs in subtropical and tropical dry grassland. The species is also known as the sooty munia or Bismarck munia. Its global extent of occurrence is estimated at 20,000 to 50,000 km2.
