Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher

Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher, Tanysiptera sylvia, breeds in north and south-east New Guinea and north-east Australia, and moves to New Guinea outside the breeding season. It was first described by Gould in 1850. A kingfisher of the family Alcedinidae, it is a paradise kingfisher with a red bill, buff breast and long tail streamers. The key field mark is a white patch on the middle of the upper back. It nests in termite mounds on the ground in Australia, and in lowland monsoon rainforest and scattered hill forest where suitable mounds are present.
