Buff-rumped Woodpecker

Meiglyptes tukki

The Buff-rumped Woodpecker (Meiglyptes tukki) is a small to medium-sized woodpecker found in the forests of Southeast Asia. It has a distinctive buff-colored rump and black and white barred plumage on its back and wings. This species is known for its drumming sound, which it creates by pecking on trees to communicate and establish territory. The Buff-rumped Woodpecker primarily feeds on insects and larvae found in tree bark, using its strong bill to drill and extract its prey. It nests in tree cavities and is often observed foraging on tree trunks and branches.
