California Condor

Gymnogyps californianus

The California Condor is a large, majestic bird with a wingspan of up to 3 meters. It has a bald head and neck, and its plumage is mostly black with white patches under the wings. These scavengers are known for their soaring flight and can be found in rugged, mountainous regions of western North America. They primarily inhabit open grasslands, shrublands, and coniferous forests. Due to habitat loss, lead poisoning, and hunting, the California Condor is critically endangered and has been the focus of intensive conservation efforts.
