California Condor

Gymnogyps californianus (Shaw, 1797)

California Condor, Gymnogyps californianus, breeds in western USA and is a New World vulture of North America. It is the only living member of its genus and is the largest land bird native to North America. The bird has black plumage with white on the underside of the wings, and a mostly bare head whose skin changes from grey in young birds to yellow and bright orange in breeding adults. Its wingspan reaches 3.0 m, the widest of any North American bird. It scavenges on carrion and can live for up to 60 years.
