California Quail

Callipepla californica

The California Quail is a small ground-dwelling bird native to the western United States. It is known for its distinctive teardrop-shaped plume on its head and its intricate black and white facial markings. These social birds are often found in groups called coveys, foraging for seeds, insects, and vegetation in scrubby habitats. Their melodious calls and quick, darting movements make them a delight to observe. California Quails are adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats, including chaparral, sagebrush, and woodland edges. They are known for their ability to quickly take cover and hide when threatened by predators.
