California Scrub Jay Aphelocoma californica is a passerine in the crow family that breeds in North America and Middle America, from Washington in the USA to Baja California in Mexico. It was described by Vigors in 1839. This jay is native to western North America, and its range extends through California and into western Nevada near Reno, reaching the western side of the Sierra Nevada. It is nonmigratory and occurs in urban areas, where it may grow tame and visit bird feeders. It was once treated together with Woodhouse's scrub jay, and the combined form was known as the western scrub jay.
