California Thrasher
Toxostoma crissale
The California Thrasher (Toxostoma crissale) is a medium-sized bird native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub habitats of California and Baja California. It has a long, curved bill, brownish-gray plumage, and a distinctive downward-curved tail. This thrasher is known for its melodious and complex song, often heard during the breeding season. It forages on the ground for insects, seeds, and fruits, using its long bill to probe in the leaf litter. The California Thrasher is a solitary and territorial bird, and it builds a bulky nest in low shrubs or on the ground. Although not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and fragmentation pose potential risks to its populations.
