California Towhee

California Towhee, Melozone crissalis, is a passerine of the Passerellidae family that breeds in western North America and Middle America, including western USA and Baja California in north-west Mexico. It was described by Vigors in 1839. The bird is closely linked to the coastal belt of western Oregon and California, and to Baja California and Baja California Sur. It is separated from the canyon towhee, a similar bird once treated with it as the brown towhee, and the two are now recognised as distinct. Its northern and Baja Californian populations are not strongly divided.
