Calliope Hummingbird

Calliope pectoralis

The Calliope Hummingbird is the smallest breeding bird in North America. Males have vibrant magenta-red throats and green backs, while females are green and white with a distinctive white stripe behind the eye. These tiny birds are known for their agility and speed in flight, often performing elaborate aerial displays to attract mates. They primarily feed on nectar from flowers and are also known to catch insects in mid-air. Calliope Hummingbirds breed in mountainous regions of western North America and migrate to Mexico and Central America for the winter.
