Canary Islands Chaffinch

Canary Islands Chaffinch, Fringilla canariensis, is a passerine finch of the Canary Islands in Africa. It is endemic to the islands and is thought to remain there throughout the year. The species was once treated as part of the Eurasian Chaffinch complex, but was later recognised as separate after genetic and structural study of Fringilla in 2021. Four subspecies are accepted: bakeri on Gran Canaria, canariensis on Tenerife and La Gomera, ombriosa on El Hierro, and palmae on La Palma. It was described by Vieillot in 1817.
