Canyon Towhee

Rhynchospiza strigiceps

The Canyon Towhee (Rhynchospiza strigiceps) is a medium-sized sparrow found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It has a distinctive rufous crown, gray-brown upperparts, and a long, dark tail with white corners. This species is often found in arid habitats such as desert scrub, chaparral, and rocky canyons. Canyon Towhees are ground foragers, feeding on seeds, insects, and small fruits. They are known for their distinctive scratching and hopping behavior while foraging. Although not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and degradation pose potential threats to their populations.
