Cape spurfowl

Pternistis capensis

The Cape spurfowl, also known as the Cape francolin, is a medium-sized bird native to southern Africa. It is characterized by its mottled brown plumage, with distinct white spots and streaks. The male has a prominent red facial patch and a spur on each leg, while the female is slightly smaller and lacks these features. These birds are commonly found in a variety of habitats including grasslands, savannas, and scrublands. They are often seen foraging on the ground for seeds, insects, and small invertebrates. The Cape spurfowl is known for its distinctive call, a series of loud, cackling notes. While not currently classified, their populations are generally stable across their range.
