Capped Heron

Pilherodius pileatus

The Capped Heron (Pilherodius pileatus) is a medium-sized heron found in the wetlands and marshes of Central and South America. It is characterized by its striking appearance, with a black cap and crest on its head, slate-gray upperparts, and white underparts. This heron is often observed foraging in shallow water for fish, amphibians, and invertebrates, using its sharp bill to catch prey. The Capped Heron nests in colonies in trees, often alongside other waterbirds. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and human disturbance, the species is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its relatively stable population and wide distribution.
