Capped Wheatear
Oenanthe pileata
The Capped Wheatear (Oenanthe pileata) is a small, insectivorous bird found in southern Africa. It is characterized by its distinctive black cap, white throat, and brownish-grey upperparts. This species is commonly found in open, arid habitats such as savannas, grasslands, and rocky areas. Capped Wheatears are known for their ground-foraging behavior, often perching on low shrubs or rocks to scan for prey. They are agile fliers and can be observed darting after flying insects. Despite being relatively common in its range, habitat degradation and agricultural expansion pose threats to its populations. As a result, the conservation status of the Capped Wheatear is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
