Cardinal Quelea

Quelea cardinalis

The Cardinal Quelea (Quelea cardinalis) is a small passerine bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is known for its striking red plumage on the head and chest, with the rest of the body being a mix of brown and gray. These birds are highly social and often form large flocks, especially during the breeding season. They are primarily seed-eaters and can be found in grasslands, savannas, and agricultural areas. The Cardinal Quelea is considered a pest by farmers due to its habit of feeding on crops, particularly grains. Despite being widespread, their population is declining due to habitat loss and control measures. As a result, they are classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
