The Cardinal Woodpecker (Dendropicos fuscescens) is a small woodpecker found in sub-Saharan Africa. It has distinctive black and white plumage with a red crown on the male. This species is known for its rhythmic drumming on trees as it searches for insects. It prefers open woodland, savanna, and forest edges, where it can be observed foraging for ants, beetles, and other small invertebrates. The Cardinal Woodpecker is a cavity nester, excavating holes in dead trees for nesting. It is a common and adaptable species, often seen in pairs or small family groups.
