Carolina Parakeet

Polyonymus caroli

The Carolina Parakeet, also known as Conuropsis carolinensis, was a colorful and social bird native to the southeastern United States. With its bright green plumage, yellow head, and red-orange face, this medium-sized parakeet was a striking sight in its natural habitat. These birds were often found in forests, swamps, and along rivers, where they fed on fruits, seeds, and nuts. Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction and hunting, the Carolina Parakeet became extinct in the early 20th century, making it the only parrot species native to the eastern United States to have suffered this fate.
