Caspian Gull

Larus cachinnans

The Caspian Gull (Larus cachinnans) is a large, robust gull with a wingspan of 145-165 cm. Adults have a white head, neck, and underparts, with a pale grey back and wings. They have yellow legs and a strong, yellow bill with a red spot near the tip. Juveniles are mottled brown and take 4 years to reach adult plumage. Caspian Gulls are found in a variety of habitats including coastal areas, inland lakes, and rivers. They are opportunistic feeders, consuming fish, insects, small mammals, and scavenging at landfill sites. This species is known for its loud, laughing call. The conservation status of the Caspian Gull is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
