Caspian Tern
Hydroprogne caspia
The Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia) is a large, distinctive seabird with a black cap, strong red bill, and a long, slender body. It has a wingspan of around 130-145 cm and is known for its loud, distinctive call. Caspian Terns are highly skilled fishers, diving from the air to catch their prey. They are found in coastal areas, particularly around large bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and estuaries. During the breeding season, they form large colonies on sandy or gravelly islands. Caspian Terns are known for their aggressive defense of their nesting sites and will dive-bomb intruders to protect their young. They are a widespread species, found on every continent except Antarctica.
