Cayenne Tern

Thalasseus acuflavidus

The Cayenne Tern (Thalasseus acuflavidus) is a striking seabird with a slender body, long pointed wings, and a deeply forked tail. This species is primarily found along the coasts of South America, particularly in the vicinity of the Cayenne region. The Cayenne Tern is an adept fisher, often observed plunge-diving to catch small fish near the water's surface. It nests in colonies on sandy beaches and coastal islands, where it lays its eggs in simple scrapes in the sand. The population of the Cayenne Tern is currently stable, but threats such as habitat loss and disturbance at breeding sites require ongoing monitoring and conservation efforts.
