Chaco puffbird

Nystalus chacuru

The Chaco puffbird (Nystalus chacuru) is a medium-sized bird found in the Gran Chaco region of South America. It has a distinctive appearance with a large head, short tail, and a stout, slightly curved bill. The plumage is predominantly brown with a mottled pattern, providing excellent camouflage in its dry scrubland habitat. Chaco puffbirds are known for their distinctive call, which is a series of low, mournful whistles. They are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of insects and occasionally small lizards. The species is generally solitary and can be found perched on exposed branches or wires, scanning for prey.
