Chatham albatross

Thalassarche eremita

The Chatham albatross, scientifically known as Thalassarche eremita, is a large seabird belonging to the albatross family. It has a wingspan of approximately 2.5 meters and is predominantly white with dark plumage on its wings and back. This species is known for its graceful and effortless gliding flight over the open ocean, where it spends the majority of its life. Chatham albatrosses are highly adapted for a pelagic lifestyle, using their keen sense of smell to locate food sources such as fish, squid, and crustaceans. They breed on a few small islands in the southern Pacific Ocean, with a population estimated at around 5,000 individuals. Threats to their survival include fisheries bycatch and habitat degradation.
