Chatham Islands Fernbird, Poodytes rufescens, was an endemic bird of the Chatham Islands, east of New Zealand’s South Island. It was first known from Mangere Island, with fossil remains later found on Pitt Island and Chatham Island too. It is now extinct. Its nearest living relative is the New Zealand fernbird, and it was once treated as part of that bird before being recognised as separate. It was also placed in different genera in the past. The species was described by Buller in 1869.
