Chatham Islands Petrel

Pterodroma axillaris (Salvin, 1893)

Chatham Islands Petrel, Pterodroma axillaris, breeds on South East Island, Rangatira, in the Chatham Islands east of New Zealand’s South Island, and ranges in the non-breeding season as far as the Nazca Ridge west of Peru and Chile. It is a petrel of the Procellariiformes, and its breeding sites are limited to the Chatham Islands. It nests in burrows beneath forest cover, using leaves for lining, and each pair lays one white egg in December or January. The chicks leave the nest in May or June.
