Chatham Islands Rail, Cabalus modestus, was an extinct flightless bird of the Chatham archipelago in New Zealand, confined to Chatham, Mangere and Pitt Islands. It is also recorded from nineteenth-century remains from Chatham and Pitt Islands. First found on Mangere in 1871, it is known there from 26 museum specimens. Its Māori name was mātirakahu. It is likely to have lived in scrubland and tussock grass. The species disappeared on the island between 1896 and 1900.
