Heterospingus rubrifrons
Cherrie's tanager (Heterospingus rubrifrons) is a small passerine bird found in the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. It is characterized by its striking red forehead and black mask, with olive-green upperparts and bright yellow underparts. This tanager is often found in montane forests, especially near the forest edge and in second growth. It forages for insects and fruits in the canopy and mid-levels of the forest. Cherrie's tanager is known for its melodious and varied song, often heard during the breeding season. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and fragmentation pose potential future threats to this species.
