Chestnut-and-black Weaver

Ploceus castaneofuscus Lesson, RP, 1840

Ploceidae — Weavers, Widowbirds

Chestnut-and-black Weaver, Ploceus castaneofuscus, is a weaver of West Africa, breeding from Sierra Leone to southern Nigeria. It belongs to the family Ploceidae and was described by Lesson in 1840. It was once regarded as part of Vieillot’s black weaver, Ploceus nigerrimus, before being recognised as a separate species. The split was made because the two birds differ markedly in plumage colour.
